100 YEARS OF INFLUENCE
THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN SHAPING THE FIRST
HUNDRED YEARS OF LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas Centennial Celebration

Local libraries and Sprint displayed the tribute to Las Vegas women May through December 2005. Women of Diversity Productions, Inc., in collaboration with other organizations, developed a 2005 program for the Las Vegas Centennial Celebration. The focus of the Women of Diversity project was on the women whose contributions had greatly contributed to society within the Las Vegas area.

Historical displays of more than two dozen women’s organizations were presented to viewers of the 100 YEARS OF INFLUENCE multimedia exhibit. Of note were two organizations, THE MUSICIAN WIVES CLUB and WOMEN’S POLITICAL CAUCUS that were formed to fill a need, and when the need no longer existed, the organizations were disbanded. Two of the older organizations, MESQUITE CLUB formed in 1911 and the SERVICE LEAGUE (now THE JUNIOR LEAGUE) in 1946 are exhibited.

Video kiosks had videos of interviews and narratives of women making significant contributions to the shaping of Las Vegas in specific time periods of its development. There was a video of the 7 MOST POWERFUL WOMEN OF LAS VEGAS IN 2004, as stated by the Las Vegas Weekly . A video of the women who had city parks, a city theatre and a city footballfield/track & field complex named for them provided historical information unknown to most of our viewers. A video of schools named for women, and videos of another thirty women comprise the videos, were shown continuously throughout each day.

Approximately 300 women were displayed on the WALL OF WOMEN that was a wall of diversity. These women were of different ethnic and religious backgrounds, different sexual orientations and different cultural communities, including the arts culture. One common thread was their passion to make this a better world. These women are community builders, entreprenuers, political activists, art advocates, philanthropists, public servants and more.
